Description
Hammond and Spitz was the company that made this old antique wrought iron fence at their shop at 2222 Dryades Street, New Orleans, LA. I am not sure which cemetery it was found in, but I think it is was in one of the St.Louis Cemeteries at the foot of Canal St. The fence is wrought iron. I would venture to guess that the sign may be cast iron. What is the difference between the two? Mainly, cast iron can be very decorative and is "cast" into molds. Not so for wrought iron. Each piece is forged to be straight and occasionally hold an ornate spearhead or other adornment. Both iron techniques can produce unique and lasting beauty, even in a cemetery. This is a "digitally produced" charcoal image on a yellow paper. See the original in site. Thanks! kkp
