Description
E J Caire and Company in Edgard, LA is on the National Register. It was built in 1855. You can find it along the River Road. The Caire family owned a lot of property in this area. Edgard is also the home of Evergreen Plantation. From Wikipedia: "In early Edgard, a favorite event of many townspeople was the arrival of the showboat which would dock at Caire's Landing. The excitement was intensified because one never knew when the next boat would arrive. When it did, the sound of the calliope's whistles could be heard as far away as Wallace. Though the steamboats are gone, one can still see modern vessels passing by, bringing the people of the River Region closer to the world around them."
By the way, when you visit New Orleans, be sure to visit the River Road plantations and old buildings like this one on both sides of the Mississippi River.
