Description
Here is the gravesite of David. That is all that is said, but we know he liked shooting fireworks and maybe a Heinken beer or two. Beads and a rosary drape his name-sign. A candle with a saint on it and a clear bell jar are other knickknacks on his final resting place. Weeds and flowers fill his plot. This is the Holt Cemetery where just about anything goes and nothing much is ever fixed. It is the only below ground cemetery in New Orleans proper. And people are buried on top of each other here in "family plots." There is another far different below ground graveyard not far away in an adjacent parish. The Holt is unlike anything you have seen, I imagine. It is almost impossible to imagine. See my photo of the brick edifice at the Holt for more info about this place, forgotten by the city of New Orleans but remembered and loved by families who have loved ones buried here. Many of the grave placards are handmade of wood or plaster. Words are usually painted onto the wood but some names and designs have been carved on the wooden ones. I have an affinity to this odd place, and I do not really know why. kk
